Fort Morris, Sunbury

During the Revolutionary War, Ft.
Morris was erected to protect the village of Sunbury
in Liberty County and was commanded by the
Scottish Colonel John McIntosh of the
Darien McIntoshes. His famous words “Come and take it” have remembered him to
history. He
represented the spirit of the protecting continentals and militia garrisoned
there . Sunbury was located along the coast in Liberty
County to protect the waterways and
was in the path of British regiments coming up from Florida
to lay siege on Savannah.
Despite its brave defenders, the little
fort could not defend itself and surrendered on January 9, 1779. This remote
village no longer exists and is under private ownership. The (above) cannon is among the relicts excavated and preserved by bringing it to the
Liberty County Court House.
Revolutionary
War Soldier’s Land Grants: Washington County

Christopher Chambliss
At the close
of the Revolutionary War many soldiers from Virginia,
Maryland and the Carolinas took up land grants
in Washington County.
These grants were recorded in the surviving plat book, when all other
early records failed. The discovery of
the plat itself is disappointing inasmuch as it does not describe definitive
boundary lines and without a supporting deed it is virtually impossible to locate
the land today. .On May 25, 1788, Christopher
Chambliss from Virginia and South Carolina was granted 575 acres of land in Washington County which there is no evidence of his
settling upon. He did, however, settle in the nearby county of Warren.
A search of the early Warren County Tax Digests disclosed his ownership of the Washington County land. Later, he was found in Bibb County
where his estate was administered in September of 1840.
This
example is given to illustrate the pattern of veterans moving around and
settling on Georgia lands as they became available from the Creeks and
Cherokees.
Conversely,
Revolutionary War Soldier, Francis
Tennille was granted 490 acres along the Oconee
River in Washington County
on May 17, 1784 and settled on this land.
Were it not for the sketch (below) of the curvature of the Oconee River
and the adjoining property of Nicholas Long, the location of his property would
be as sketchy as that of Christopher Chambliss.
