Atlanta Named After Martha Lumpkin by Jeannette Holland Austin

Martha Lumpkin, daughter of Governor Lumpkin, was known to be
a woman of noble character and rare accomplishments. She became
the wife of Mr. Compton and resided with him in the home of her
childhood in Athens. As an old woman, she was serene and happy and
had an unshaken faith in the growth of Atlanta. Atlanta was first called
Terminus because of the Georgia Railroad, then Marthasville, and finally
Atlanta.
