Lost Generations
Dead Ends by Jeannette Holland Austin
Everyone arrives at the old brick wall sooner or later. I recently completed tracing a family which was a project for more than 40 years. There were virtually no records. So here is what I did. I searched all around it and identified most every family in the region/regions. Once this project was completed, the narrowing down began. Only two families qualified to have a child of that approximate age. Published genealogies do frequently omit children, simply because the last will and testament omitted that child, he had already moved away, etc. Somehow, we have establish the names of all the families having the same surname. The details are so important. Other sources are deeds, tax digests and inventories of estates. The annual returns of an estate list the transactions, who was paid, who received, etc. Heirs gave receipts or vouchers when they received property or cash from the estate. The sale of the property listed the widow who was given incidential household items and other names. The other names are suspect to be relatives. I cross-check the male purchasers in that county's marriage records to discern whether or not he married a daughter in the family. I want to know the identify of every person who participates in an estate. It's the only way.See what wills, estates, records are Available for Georgia Counties

Letters, Sentences and Maxims. Philip Dormer Stanhope, Earl of Chesterfield, 1694-1773, had a
fate generally misunderstood. Dr. Johnson, a poor scholar but in the prime of life, seems to have mistaken a delay in an interview, and to have abused his lordship very soundly ever afterward. To this misconception we owe one of the finest and manliest letters ever written. Mrs. Eugenia Stanhope, the widow of the recipient of these letters, sold them, enhanced in value from the earl's literary reputation, for 1,500 pounds! That was an immense sum in those days.

GRAVES. I am researching early Georgia to discover more about the Graves family. My gg grandfather was George Graves who married Lulender Gunn in 1840 in Warren County, Georgia. I can't find George's parents. There was a Thomas Graves Sr b 1729 Lower Potomack Hundred, Maryland. He and sons are listed on the 1790 Franklin County Census. I can't connect any of them to George Graves yet. One thing I know, is that Dr. George Graves who married Mary Scott June 26 1790 in Augusta, Georgia is not the father of my George Graves. My George Graves and wife moved west through Alabama, Mississippi, and settled in Wood County, Texas 1854-1858, where they are listed on the 1860 census. I am aware of a Graves family in Muscogee County Georgia and wonder if they are related to my George Graves? Eddie Graves, Wichita Falls, Texas. egraves@sw.rr.com
PEACOCK. From: S A STANCLIFF Date: 5/17/2009. I've been trying to desperately find the gravesite of John Peacock (married to Nancy Peyton), both from Maryland. Here's what I know: --first they lived in Oglethorpe Co.; he died in Jasper Co., GA; his birth/death dates: 1745-1826; There are a lot of Jasper Co. deed documents I've found on line between he and his sons, etc. I assume he's buried on his land...which is hard to pinpoint. He had sons Lewis, Daniel and William...just to name a few of his children. His son Lewis married Avey Hill, daughter of Mordecai Hill. I've visited the county library in Monticello, GA but still can't find where he's buried. Thanks for anything you can supply. Susan Stancliff 770-939-4698
