Researching Franklin County by Jeannette Holland Austin

Many veterans of the American Revolution received land grants in old Franklin County. If you are researching this county, also look in Jackson County as it was taken from Franklin and there are spill-overs there. If you have visited this county seat lately, you will discover that the will books do not begin until 1900. They have removed the oldest books somewhere else, probably the local historical society. Whether or not your families were known to have been in Franklin, some of the records there should be perused, because most veterans received land grants in more than one county. When I am stuck, I always return to the counties which existed in a certain time period to be sure I did not miss anything. What I usually find are other members of the family, like brothers, etc. When a new name is discovered, then I look at the deed records to see where he came from. That is the clue. My ancestor probably came from the same area. The first deed books have been extracted and can be found at regional libraries which feature genealogy sections. Details and a list of some of the earliest settlers
