Virginia's Ancient Families
By Jeannette Holland Austin
Many Virginians came from England and the British Isles to settle in the new country. Once here, they held important official offices such as burgesses, royal governors, etc. Genealogists researching their American roots have to consider the original thirteen colonies. Virginia, founded in 1604, has a vast collection of colonial records. Many Colonials paid their own passage to the new country, bringing with them family members and servants, for which they received land grants. So, expect to find that many families were titled and descend from the royal houses of Europe and came to Virginia as adventurers. VirginiaPioneers.com is in the process of collecting and publishing many ancient genealogies connected to Virginia families and hope to add many more in the coming weeks. We have added the following ancient family genealogies and records to Virginia Pioneers

ANCIENT FAMILIES CONNECTED TO VIRGINIANS...citations from English Records. Names included so far: Audley, Ellis, Babb, Bacon, Ball, Boys, Burley, Barnard, Baxter, Bridge, Cary, Chestwood, Chinn, Cody, Cobin, Cutler, Digges, Driver, Ducane, Famsterwick, Grendon, Honeywood, Lamp, Littleton, Maddock, Matthews, Nicholson, Reeve, Richards, Strachey, Veheath, Vesey, Younge and Wyeth. More to come.

ANCIENT FAMILIES FROM THE BRITISH ISLES TO VIRGINIA. These are ancient genealogies which have Virginia connections. Cocke of Shropshire; Chiefs Colquhoun of Scotland; Molyneux/Mullenax of Lancastershire; Nicholson of Suffolk; Yuille (Yowell) of Dumbarton, Scotland

Another Family Story Cherished

Dear Jeannette, I really enjoyed reading your most recent Pioneer News and about your memories of the Civil War. I am guessing I am about your age so I can relate to your stories. My grandmother was born in Columbus, Ga. in 1868 and she married Harry Holland Daniel (1859-1919) also of Columbus, Ga. Harry’s father was James Thomas Daniel (1832-1884) who was born and died in Columbus. James Thomas Daniel rose to the rank of Captain in the 46th Georgia Volunteer Infantry. Harry Holland Daniel and my grandmother had 6 boys and 2 girls. The youngest boy was my father, William J. Daniel who entered West Point in 1929 from the state of Louisiana and graduated in 1933. In June, 1933, my grandmother traveled from New Orleans to West Point to watch her son, William receive his diploma. After the ceremony was over, she told her son that his father (who had died in 1919) never wanted any of his sons to serve in the US military ever. She explained that Harry had attempted to gain admission to the US Naval Academy in Annapolis in the class of 1877 but was told that they were not accepted applications from “Southerners”. He was so incensed that he declared that none of his sons would ever serve in the US military. As it turned out, his eldest son Lt. George Daniel would died in France in 1919 and the second oldest son, Phillip, also fought in WWI rising to the rank of Captain in he US Marines. Finally, there was my father who joined the Louisiana National Guard in 1926, graduated from West Point in 1933 and retired from the army in 1960 at the rank of Col.. He died in Austin, Texas in 1998 at the age of 89. He was born on June 14, 1908 (Flag Day) and died on June 6, 1998 (D-Day which he had participated in as commanding officer of the 323 Field Artillery Batt.). My grandmother lived from 1868 to 1957 and was a source of many stories about Georgia and the Civil War. Richard B. Daniel, Salem, OR

Chesterfield's Letters by Lord Chesterfield. Letters, Sentences and Maxims. Philip Dormer Stanhope, Earl of Chesterfield, 1694-1773, had a fate generally misunderstood. Dr. Johnson, a poor scholar but in the prime of life, seems to have mistaken a delay in an interview, and to have abused his lordship very soundly ever afterward. To this misconception we owe one of the finest and manliest letters ever written. Mrs. Eugenia Stanhope, the widow of the recipient of these letters, sold them, enhanced in value from the earl's literary reputation, for 1,500 pounds! That was an immense sum in those days. Published 1894 in Philadelphia, 307 pp., indexed. A rare find indeed!

GRAVES. I am researching early Georgia to discover more about the Graves family. My gg grandfather was George Graves who married Lulender Gunn in 1840 in Warren County, Georgia. I can't find George's parents. There was a Thomas Graves Sr b 1729 Lower Potomack Hundred, Maryland. He and sons are listed on the 1790 Franklin County Census. I can't connect any of them to George Graves yet. One thing I know, is that Dr. George Graves who married Mary Scott June 26 1790 in Augusta, Georgia is not the father of my George Graves. My George Graves and wife moved west through Alabama, Mississippi, and settled in Wood County, Texas 1854-1858, where they are listed on the 1860 census. I am aware of a Graves family in Muscogee County Georgia and wonder if they are related to my George Graves? Eddie Graves, Wichita Falls, Texas. egraves@sw.rr.com
