Middletons of Berkeley County, South Carolina by Jeannette Holland Austin

Edward Middleton came to Berkley County from the Barbadoes and received substantial land grants. He established The Oaks Plantation on Goose Creek, now located on Middleton Drive. It is at The Oaks where his children were born and the Middleton family created an empire. A daughter of Thomas Middleton, Member of the Council, Mary, was married to the famous Pierce Butler. Butler of Georgia added her inheritance to his unparalled wealthy plantations in South Carolina and Georgia.
